The Issue

The 24th Call to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada calls upon Canadian medical and nursing schools to implement mandatory courses on Indigenous health issues.

The goal of this Call to Action is to improve health outcomes and combat systemic racism against Indigenous peoples in the healthcare system.

There is currently a large and negatively impactful healthcare gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous patients. By educating nursing and medical students on residential schools history, UNDRIP treaties, Aborigional rights and Indigenous teachings there will be the creation of a culturally safe healthcare system. The desired result is to improve health outcomes for Indigenous peoples.
