Implement Average Speed Cameras Throughout Rufford Village for Traffic Safety

The Issue

I live in the beautiful village of Rufford in Ormskirk, UK. My home, as well as those of many families we know, is situated along the A59 road, a thoroughfare that has unfortunately become a hotspot for fast and dangerous driving. Too often, drivers only slow down momentarily when they spot mobile speed cameras, paying no attention to the permanent speed limit signs. This has led to several serious accidents and countless near misses, putting lives at risk.

At the moment speed limits go from 30 to national speed limit sections throughout the village. Whilst a duel carriageway with very few road facing properties has a limit of 50mph enforced by average speed cameras

The village includes housing that fronts onto the road, a national trust property, canal walks and a local primary school, these all become dangerous when people drive at excessive speed through the village.

Average speed cameras from Tarleton lights to the end of the village at the 50mph zone could be a potential solution to this. These cameras don't just capture a snapshot of the speed that vehicles are travelling at an instant, like the mobile speed cameras we currently have. Instead, they measure the average speed of vehicles over a longer distance, which can be more effective at maintaining lower speeds (Department for Transport, UK).

As a resident, I see the value these cameras could provide in making our village a safer place for everyone. I have contacted our new MP and would like to share this petition to show this is an issue that matters to the people of Rufford . Let's put a stop to dangerous driving in our community. Encourage the implementation of average speed cameras throughout Rufford. Sign this petition to show your support and help make our village safer for all.
