Across the United States, millions of students take part in standardized tests. However, the current testing system does not adequately cater to all students. Specifically, students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) bear a disproportionate burden, often dealing with educational systems that do not fully accommodate their needs. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it's estimated that 6.1 million children aged 2-17 years have been diagnosed with ADHD in the US. These students face unique challenges, particularly with standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, where obtaining necessary accommodations can be difficult and burdensome. The process is highly dependent on extensive documentation, putting unwarranted pressure on affected students and their families. This petition proposes an important reform: that standardized testing boards across the U.S. automatically provide ADHD-friendly accommodations such as extra time and breaks for all test-takers diagnosed with ADHD, without requiring extensive paperwork. A fair, inclusive education system advances everyone's interests. Let's make standardized tests more equitable for ADHD students.
