Hello Supporters,
Before I say anything else, I recorded a short message for all of you. It comes from the heart. Watch my video here.
At the time of writing, nearly 40,000 of you have signed this petition. I want to take a moment before next week to just say, thank you. From the bottom of my heart and from our entire family — thank you.
When I started this petition after we lost Andrew, I didn't know what it would become. I just knew I couldn't do nothing. And because of you, and tens of thousands of people said "this isn't okay", something remarkable happened. The Ontario government listened. Last November, they proposed new measures, including indefinite licence suspensions for dangerous driving causing death and new powers for police to act faster. That happened because of this petition. Because of you.
Andrew's trial begins on Monday, April 27th at the Newmarket courthouse. I'll be there, for Andrew, for his wife and children, and for every family that has been through what ours has. The legal process is its own journey, and we respect it. But no matter what happens inside that courtroom, we still have work to do outside of it.
Bill 75, the Keeping Criminals Behind Bars Act, which incorporates Andrew's Law, has not yet been passed. But we are encouraged. The bill has broad cross-party support and is currently before the Standing Committee on Justice Policy. We are closer than we have ever been. This moment, Andrew's trial, all the signatures, is our chance to show every elected official that Ontario is watching, and that we believe they will do the right thing.
If you are in the York Region or GTA, I'd love for you to join me outside the courthouse on Monday, April 27th at 8:30am. We won't be protesting. We'll be gathered quietly, in Andrew's memory, to show that behind every signature is a real person who cares. Please consider bringing a note or a letter to support our family in this season.
If you can't be there in person, please share this petition today. Every signature and every share tells the legislature: finish the job.
Andrew loved his family fiercely. He was a father, a husband, a son, a brother, and one of the best people I've ever known. He deserved to come home that night. We can't change what happened. But we can make sure his name means something, that the road ahead is safer because Andrew was here.
With so much gratitude,
Jordan Cristillo
