The Issue
On Monday, May 12, 2025, GUSD's School Board voted against adopting an Ethnic Studies curriculum. As a mother and aunt to multiple students within the Glendora Unified School District, I am deeply concerned about our students' future opportunities, particularly in gaining college acceptance. It is particularly worrisome that the University of California (UC) system is discontinuing partnerships with school districts that fail to incorporate Ethnic Studies into their curriculum. This exclusion of Ethnic Studies leaves our students at a competitive disadvantage compared to others who have access to a more inclusive and comprehensive education.
Ethnic Studies is not just an academic subject; it’s a critical tool for understanding diverse cultures and histories and promotes empathy, cultural competency, and respect for diversity. In today's globalized world, these skills are indispensable for students to thrive in higher education and beyond. The inclusion of an Ethnic Studies curriculum would allow students to gain a holistic understanding of the society in which they live, preparing them more thoroughly for college, career, and civic life.
Research consistently shows that students who participate in Ethnic Studies courses demonstrate improved academic performance, a greater sense of self-efficacy, and a reduced dropout rate. According to a Stanford University study, participation in Ethnic Studies courses increases high school graduation rates and overall student engagement, particularly among students of color.
Several states have already successfully implemented Ethnic Studies programs. For instance, in 2017, the state of California passed legislation, AB 2016, which mandates the creation of a model curriculum in Ethnic Studies for high schools, encouraging schools to integrate this program into their curricula. As a progressive and diverse community, Glendora Unified should take a leading role in adopting an Ethnic Studies curriculum to empower and educate the next generation.
I urge Glendora Unified School District's School Board to take swift and decisive action in incorporating an Ethnic Studies curriculum into the educational framework. Let's grant our students the equitable academic opportunities they deserve and make sure they have every tool necessary to build a brighter future.
Please sign this petition to voice your support for implementing an Ethnic Studies curriculum in Glendora Unified School District. Let’s work together to prepare our children for a world that values inclusivity and diversity. Together, we can make a difference.
