The Issue

As someone who has personally witnessed the stagnation and increasing animosity in our political dialogues over the past thirty plus years, I feel compelled to call for a significant change in our Congress.  The arguments on policies, such as abortion and immigration have not only remained unresolved, but have escalated in complexity and divisiveness across the country.  I attribute this situation to a lack of adequate representation in Congress that does not reflect the majority of the working-class populace.

Our democratic society is expected to progress as its people evolve, however, statistics reflect that our Congress has remained the same on most policies for decades, showcasing an inability to grow with us. It is disheartening that our representation lacks adaptability of a growing society. The constitution, designed to be a living document, amended to societal progress, seems impaired by the stagnancy in the legislative body today.

As President Biden, who was a senator, demonstrated when he stepped down from reelection for President, his decision reflected such admirable humility with the awareness of an evolving political climate which we desperately need.

Therefore, I propose that the government implement an absolute limit of terms serving in Congress.

For example, a maximum of 6 terms for Representatives and a maximum of 2 terms for senators.  This would ensure a continual influx of fresh perspectives that can adequately represent the changing landscape of policies and general ideologies in present time.  This would create a more effective government for the United States and avoid further development of a disconnected political class. This is our chance to embody the ideal that our Constitution was designed to evolve with us.

According to Statista Research Department, the most recent polling data from July of 2024 places the approval rating of the United States Congress at 16 percent among citizens, reflecting an increase from June. The approval rating has remained low for the 118th Congress, which began in January 2023.
