I am a first-generation college student who daily commutes from the northwest suburbs of Chicago to the city's heart for my education. With a burden of financial constraints and a disabled parent, my challenges are manifold. My inability to work adequate hours due to commuting puts considerable pressure on my pocket and hinders my striving for a livable income. Understanding the economic hardships that numerous students like myself face, we must address the need for affordable Metra train services for college students. 

The Metra train system serves over 200 communities with 11 routes and approximately 242 stations, functioning as the powerhouse behind Chicago's commuting system. College students make up a significant proportion of these daily commuters, yet little has been done to cater to their distinct needs. It is crucial to acknowledge that commuting costs weigh heavily on college students, particularly those from lower-income families or first-generation college students.

By implementing a college student discount, we not only lessen the financial burden on students but also foster a supportive environment that enables us to focus more on our studies and less on finances. This call is not an undue demand but a measure towards equitable facilities for all.

I urge Metra and relevant authorities to consider this petition sincerely and take immediate steps to incorporate affordable student discounts into their fare structure.
