We are students at Texas State University, and we deeply care about the environment that surrounds us. The San Marcos River, a precious natural resource that flows through our campus, is home to numerous endangered species. Our concern for these creatures and the overall health of our environment has led us to propose this petition.

We urge the university administration to establish a year-round environmental volunteer program. This program should be competition-based, encouraging both students and faculty members to participate in various activities such as trash pick-ups, river clean-ups, and other environmental efforts.

According to Keep America Beautiful's 2020 National Litter Study, over 50 billion pieces of litter are strewn along U.S roadways alone. With our university-wide initiative, we can significantly reduce local littering rates while fostering an environmentally conscious community spirit.

Our proposal aligns with Texas State University's commitment towards sustainability as outlined in its Campus Master Plan (2017). By implementing this program, we would not only be preserving our local ecosystem but also setting an example for other universities nationwide.
