The Issue

Support a Future-Ready Education for All Students

We, the families, educators, students, taxpayers, and community members of the Wauconda School District, respectfully urge our school district to begin planning and implementation of a Two-Way Dual Language Program beginning with the 2027–2028 school year.

A two-way dual language program brings together native English speakers and native speakers of another language — most commonly Spanish and English — to learn academic content in both languages. These programs are designed to help students become:

Bilingual
Biliterate
Academically successful
Culturally competent and globally prepared

Research consistently shows that students in dual language immersion programs often outperform peers in traditional monolingual programs academically while also developing valuable multilingual skills.

Why Our District Should Act Now
Over the past year, our district has faced difficult and challenging times that have impacted students, families, staff, and the broader community. While those challenges have tested us, they also present an opportunity to come together with a renewed focus on the future. Now is the time to invest in positive, forward-thinking initiatives that expand opportunities for our students and strengthen confidence in our schools. A two-way dual language program represents a meaningful step toward building a brighter future, one that embraces innovation, inclusion, academic excellence, and long-term student success. By beginning the planning process now for a 2027–2028 launch, our district can demonstrate a commitment to growth, unity, and preparing students with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

By planning now for a 2027–2028 rollout, our district would have time to:

  • Conduct community interest surveys
  • Build a phased implementation plan
  • Recruit and train bilingual educators
  • Apply for grants and state/federal support
  • Develop curriculum and staffing models
  • Engage families in meaningful planning

The Benefits of Two-Way Dual Language Education

Research-backed benefits include:

Higher Academic Achievement
Students in dual language immersion programs often perform as well as or better than peers in English-only programs in reading and math.

Bilingualism and Biliteracy
Students graduate with advanced proficiency in two languages, an increasingly valuable skill in college admissions and the workforce.

Stronger Cognitive Skills
Studies have linked bilingualism with improved problem-solving, mental flexibility, and executive functioning.

Cultural Understanding and Inclusion
Two-way immersion classrooms promote cross-cultural relationships and inclusive learning environments for all students.

Long-Term Economic Advantages
Bilingual graduates are better prepared for careers in healthcare, education, business, public service, and global industries.

Nearby Illinois Districts Already Offering Dual Language Programs
Families throughout northern Illinois already have access to successful dual language programs, including:

  • Cary School District 26 - Dual Language classes, available for eligible students in PreK to 8th grade provide instruction in Spanish and English with the goal of developing bilingualism, biliteracy, multiculturalism, and academic proficiencies in both languages.
  • Community Unit School District 300 offers a Spanish/English Dual Language Program designed to help students achieve full biliteracy and cross-cultural understanding.
  • Huntley District 158’s Dual Language Program is a vital part of the district’s Multilingual Services, launched in 2017.

  • Community Consolidated School District 46 is launching a new two-way dual language program for incoming kindergarten students.

Our students deserve the same opportunities available in neighboring communities.

What We Are Requesting
We respectfully ask the Board of Education and district leadership to:

  • Conduct a districtwide feasibility and interest study during the 2026–2027 school year.
  • Create a Dual Language Planning Committee including parents, teachers, administrators, and community members.
  • Explore Spanish-English two-way immersion as the model.
  • Develop a phased implementation plan beginning with kindergarten and first grade in 2027–2028.
  • Pursue state and federal funding opportunities to support implementation.
  • Provide transparent public updates throughout the planning process.

Our Vision
We believe our district can become a leader in innovative, inclusive, future-focused education. A two-way dual language program is not just a language initiative — it is an investment in: academic excellence, equity, cultural understanding, and long-term student success.
