Implement a Student Rights Protocol at South Winn Elementary and Middle School

The Issue

As a student at South Winn Elementary and Middle School, I've experienced firsthand the imprinting of decisions that disregard students' agency. Too often, we are told to forgive and forget when disagreements occur, with little regard for our perspectives, feelings, and right to choose. This experience isn't exclusive to me, but shared across the student body, creating an environment that represses communication and emotional growth.

Contrary to our circumstances, research clearly points out that encouraging self-expression and choice-making in children has a positive impact on their development, fostering skills such as problem-solving, resilience, autonomy, and emotional intelligence (Affolter, F.W., 2019). Sure, there are times for adults to make decisions for children, but a balance needs to be struck that also respects students' rights in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Therefore, the petition calls for South Winn Elementary and Middle School to establish a comprehensive “Student Rights Protocol.” This protocol should incorporate a framework that respects students' rights to voice their opinions, fosters emotional intelligence, and promotes healthy resolution of conflicts. It should be communicated clearly to all stakeholders and implemented with dedication.

Support us in bringing this crucial change to our school system. Every signature increases the chances of us students regaining our rights of choice and expression, and ensuring a healthy, prosperous learning environment. Sign this petition now.
