Every day, I worry about the safety of my children and the students at Bayshore High School. This concern is not just theoretical—it stems from personal experience. Myself and others have been involved in car accidents due to the absence of a designated speed limit in our school zone. Cars rush through this area at alarming speeds, creating a treacherous environment for children walking home, parents picking up their kids, and even for the drivers themselves.

Currently, Bayshore High School lacks a posted school zone speed limit, which creates an unsafe atmosphere where drivers aren't reminded to slow down during critical school start and end times. This oversight endangers our children every day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, implementing school zone speed limits can reduce the likelihood of accidents by up to 44%. This proven measure should not be overlooked in our community.

We already have other schools in our vicinity with designated speed limits, which have shown to successfully decrease accidents and ensure the safety of all. If it works for other schools, why not Bayshore High? By enacting a speed limit, we can protect our children and provide peace of mind to parents who are naturally concerned when their children are exposed to reckless driving.

We urge the local authorities, including the Manatee County School District and the local traffic management bodies, to immediately address this issue. By instituting a school zone speed limit, we can prevent future accidents, injuries, and potential fatalities. The safety of our children should never be compromised due to administrative oversights or delays.
