Implement a Review of City Flag Designs
Implement a Review of City Flag Designs
The Issue
Our city's flag is a symbol of our identity and unity. Visual representations often bring communities together, fortifying pride and solidarity. Unfortunately, the current city flag falls short in articulating the vibrant, diverse, and unique aspects of our community. The existing design has been unchanged for years, and lacks a modern touch that reflects the evolution and dynamism of our city.
Flag designs should communicate the city's history, values, and aspirations. The North American Vexillological Association's (NAVA) survey of 150 city flags found 40% of residents didn't even recognize their city's flag, indicating a disconnection between the symbol and its people, which we believe is also the case for our city.
Using other cities as examples, such as the successful revamp of flag design in Pocatello, Idaho, which was once rated as the worst city flag and now proudly displays a modern emblem, can inspire change. A more thoughtful, inclusive process involving local artists, historians, and general public will yield a flag we can all identify with and be proud of.
This campaign therefore demands a review and potential redesign of our city flag. Sign this petition to help push the city council to establish a review process that includes participation from the community and provide opportunities for new designs to be considered and voted upon. Your signature counts. Let's wave a flag that truly represents us.
