Implement a Rating System for Books to Protect Children from Inappropriate Content

The Issue

As concerned citizens, we urge the relevant authorities to establish a rating system for books, similar to how movies are rated, in order to protect children and adolescents from accessing explicit and inappropriate content. This petition is personal to the creator because The United States of America is unfortunately the leading buyer of child pornography. It is imperative that we prioritize the safety and well-being of our children by taking proactive measures.

Personal story
Growing up,  Books allowed me to explore different worlds, expand my imagination, and learn valuable life lessons. However, today middle school and high school, Children under the age of 17 encounter books that contained explicit content far beyond what was appropriate for their age group.

It has become evident that there is no system in place to protect students from such inappropriate material.

It deeply concerns me that many schools across the country still have books readily available on their shelves that would be considered x-rated if they were movies. Our children deserve better protection against explicit content until they are mature enough to handle it responsibly.

Statistics:
While it may be difficult to find specific statistics regarding inappropriate content in books accessible by minors due to its subjective nature, studies have shown alarming trends related to child pornography consumption within the United States (source: National Center for Missing & Exploited Children). The prevalence of such material highlights the urgent need for preventive measures within all forms of media consumed by children.

Petition Objective:
We propose implementing a rating system for books based on their content's appropriateness for different age groups. This would enable parents/guardians as well as educators to make informed decisions regarding the suitability of certain books for children under the age of 16.

Similar to movie ratings, books could be categorized as G (General Audience), PG (Parental Guidance Suggested), PG-13 (Parents Strongly Cautioned), and R (Restricted). This system would provide a clear guideline for parents, teachers, and librarians to ensure that children are not exposed to explicit or inappropriate material beyond their maturity level.

By signing this petition, we call upon educational institutions, libraries, and relevant authorities to prioritize child safety by implementing a rating system for books. Let us work together to protect our children from accessing content that is harmful or unsuitable for their age group.

Together, we can create an environment where young readers can explore literature without fear of encountering explicit material. Sign this petition today and help us safeguard the innocence and well-being of our future generations.
