My best friend was tragically struck by a speeding driver while crossing Whitbourne Avenue in Swindon, UK. She sadly passed away the following day.  This devastating incident has exposed the urgent need for safer pedestrian infrastructure on this road.

Whitbourne Avenue is a busy thoroughfare with high-speed traffic, and yet it lacks adequate facilities to ensure pedestrian safety. The absence of a designated pedestrian crossing poses significant risks to those who traverse this road daily, especially children and elderly residents.

According to Road Safety Factsheet 2019 by the UK Department for Transport, there were 25,511 serious injuries in reported road traffic accidents in 2018 alone. Of these incidents, pedestrians accounted for 26% of fatalities - an alarming statistic that underscores the importance of immediate action.

We urge local authorities to implement a pedestrian crossing along Whitbourne Avenue as soon as possible. This will not only enhance safety but also serve as a tribute to my friend's memory and help prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
