Implement a No-Glass Policy in Pubs and Clubs After 9PM and Enforce ID Checks
The Issue
In November of 2022, I experienced a life-altering incident. During a day out in Swansea while enjoying a popular event called beaujolais day, I was the victim of an unprovoked attack. As I stood in the ladies bathroom applying my lipstick in the mirror a complete stranger entered the toilets and confronted me and a friend of mine. As I turned around to see who was speaking to me a broken glass was used as a weapon against me, she used the glass to cut and slash at my face and chest leaving me with a deep jagged wound across my left cheek and the end of my nose hanging off. The injury to my cheek was so deep my saliva gland was severed. I am now left with permanent 7cm scar on the left side of my face, another scar on the tip of my nose, and a 15cm scar across my chest. Not to mention the mental scars I carry with me.
This is not just about me. This is about preventing such violent incidents from happening to anyone else in Wales. The use of glassware in pubs and clubs can turn into dangerous weapons when things go awry. According to Alcohol Concern Cymru (2011), there were over 87,000 violent incidents involving alcohol in Wales alone that year.
I propose that all pubs and clubs across Wales ban glasses after 9pm – replacing them with safer alternatives like plastic cups – to reduce the risk of such attacks occurring again. Additionally, implementing stricter ID policies will ensure only responsible adults are allowed entry after this time.
We must take action now to prevent more people from experiencing what I went through or worse. Please sign this petition today so we can make our social spaces safer for everyone in Wales.
