This petition stems from a personal motivation. More than 8 million people worldwide die each year due to smoking, and I fear that if we do nothing, the number will increase dramatically. These deaths are preventable, yet we, as a society, continue to allow cigarettes and e-cigarettes to be sold and consumed freely.

In addition to the devastating impact on the lives of smokers, secondhand smoke is a significant health concern for all. It harms the health of non-smokers and adds to the strain of public health services. The World Health Organisation states that second-hand smoke causes over a million deaths annually, globally (source: WHO). Australia is not immune to this impact.

The time has come to put public health and wellbeing ahead of tobacco industry interests. By banning cigarettes and e-cigarettes, we protect our citizens from needless harm, and help to create a healthier future for generations to come.
