Just this past September, a cryptocurrency mining project was approved in Big Lakes County, Alberta without any conditions. There seemed to be an urgency to get this project off the ground even though our community has not had the opportunity to voice our concerns or understand the potential consequences of having such operations in our area. The problem is, our county currently lacks specific regulations for these projects, yet their proposals have begun to surface at an alarming rate.
Big Lakes County is home to vibrant communities and beautiful natural habitats, both of which could be at risk if we allow unregulated data centers and cryptocurrency mining operations to proliferate. These projects are known to consume immense amounts of energy, often derived from non-renewable sources, contributing significantly to carbon emissions and environmental degradation. According to a 2021 report by the University of Cambridge, global electricity consumption by cryptocurrency mining alone is equivalent to the energy use of entire countries like Argentina or the Netherlands.
Beyond environmental concerns, there’s also the potential strain on local infrastructure and the possible impact on property values. Residents have a right to understand these impacts fully before any further projects are greenlit. We deserve to have comprehensive discussions about the long-term impacts of these data centers on our utilities, roads, and local communities rooted in the assessment and input of experts, residents, and stakeholders alike.
To protect our community and make informed, responsible decisions about our shared future, we urgently need a temporary halt on the approval of any new data centers or cryptocurrency mining projects within Big Lakes County.
