The Issue
Witnessing firsthand the struggles that many students face, I'm advocating for John F. Kennedy High School to implement a mandatory monthly “Mental-Health Check-In Day.” I’ve seen my classmates grapple silently with stress, anxiety, and personal issues, often compounded by school pressures and problems at home. Many students are uncertain about where to turn for help, leaving them to deal with these challenges in isolation. It's imperative that our school steps up to support our students' mental well-being before these issues escalate into more serious problems.
We are proposing that every student at John F. Kennedy High School have a scheduled, private check-in meeting with the school mental-health team once a month. This initiative can be executed in person or via Zoom, providing flexibility and accessibility for all students. These brief check-ins would offer students a safe, confidential space to express their feelings and concerns, fostering a supportive school environment.
Mental health is as vital as physical health, especially in high-pressure environments like high school. The statistics speak for themselves: according to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 49.5% of adolescents have had a mental disorder at some point. Moreover, the American Psychological Association finds that stress can significantly impact teens' academic performance and overall quality of life.
By implementing a “Mental-Health Check-In Day,” JFK High School can become a pioneer in prioritizing student mental health, setting an empowering example for other educational institutions within the district. This initiative not only shows that the school cares but that mental health is taken seriously as a part of a holistic education.
I urge the district officials, school administrators, and community members to back this vital initiative to help our students thrive. Please sign this petition to ensure every student at JFK High School receives the mental health support they need and deserve.
