Implement a Mandatory 48-Hour Window for Online University Exams

The Issue

As full-time students juggling academic responsibilities alongside part-time jobs, we remain deeply dissatisfied by the critical lack of flexibility accorded in our online assessments. Chief among these concerns is the strict deadline of 11:59 PM every Friday for test submissions. For many students, including myself, who work in the service industry on weekends, meeting such deadlines becomes an insurmountable challenge. It effectively bars us from earning full points on these tests, even though late submissions are accepted at a reduced credit.

Coupled with the size of the test—30 questions—it's unreasonable to expect completion within 12 hours. Allowing a 48-hour window for test submissions offers a fair playing ground for students like us who shoulder multiple responsibilities. Up to 50% of the course's students are laboring under similar circumstances, making this change both essential and relevant.

A recent study from Portland State University shows that flexible testing times lead to less stress and higher scores among students. Sheer exhaustion from working late into Friday nights can hinder our ability to effectively concentrate on the test, resulting in a lower test score that doesn't accurately measure our understanding of the course material.

We hope the changes in the timing of examination will create a system that is both equitable and considerate of students' multifaceted commitments. We urge our professors to reevaluate and restructure the timing of online assessments to implement a 48-hour window. Please sign the petition to support students in balancing their commitments while ensuring their academic progress.
