Implement a Law for CNA to Patient Ratio in Minnesota's Long Term Care Facilities

Implement a Law for CNA to Patient Ratio in Minnesota's Long Term Care Facilities
The Issue
I started my journey as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with a singular goal: to provide care to others in the way I would have wanted my own grandmother to be treated. However, the reality of working in the long-term care industry in Minnesota has revealed an alarming truth. Without any legal requirement for a CNA to patient ratio, it has become increasingly difficult to fulfill this objective.
There is no cap on the number of patients assigned to each CNA, making it practically unfeasible to offer comprehensive and individualized care to our vulnerable elderly population. Being at the forefront of direct care, we are saddled with an overwhelming workload that not only impacts the quality of care provided but also accelerates the rate of healthcare burnout among care professionals. The current scenario jeopardizes the healthcare quality for our residents in nursing homes, putting their overall well-being and recovery at risk.
Undoubtedly, a safe staffing ratio is integral to optimal care delivery. Studies have indicated that a lower patient to nursing assistant ratio leads to improved outcomes and higher satisfaction rates among both patients and healthcare professionals (source: Health Services Insights, 2016). Implementing a mandated CNA to patient ratio in Minnesota nursing homes no higher than 1:8 will not just benefit our seniors in long-term care facilities; it will likewise help in preventing premature caregiver burnout among CNAs.
It's high time we pave the way for a healthier, safer, and more supportive healthcare environment in Minnesota. Therefore, I am urging the Minnesota legislature to mandate a CNA to patient/resident ratio law in all long term care facilities across the state. Sign our petition and assist us in championing this change for our seniors, and for the CNAs who tirelessly dedicate themselves to nurturing and caring for them.
