The issue

Having relocated from Victoria to Cowell, I've experienced firsthand the challenges of transportation in regional areas. The lack of efficient and fast connectivity between key locations significantly hampers regional development. This is why I am calling on both the Federal Government and the South Australian Government to introduce a high-speed rail link connecting Adelaide -Port Augusta- Cowell and Port Lincoln.

Introduction:

  • South Australia’s regional communities are in urgent need of better and more efficient transport connections to our state capital and other major cities. Currently, residents and visitors traveling between Adelaide, Port Augusta, Cowell  and Port Lincoln face long, costly, and inefficient travel times, often relying on road transport or expensive flights.
  • A high-speed train service would provide a sustainable, affordable, and accessible mode of transport for local residents, tourists, and businesses alike. Not only would it reduce travel time, but it would also support local economies, reduce traffic congestion, and contribute to the State's environmental sustainability goals.

Why This Train Service is Needed:

Improved Travel Efficiency:

  • The current road trip between Adelaide and Port Lincoln takes approximately 7-8 hours, while Port Augusta is around 3 hours away by road.
  • A high-speed train would significantly reduce this travel time, potentially cutting it in half or more.
  • A high-speed rail link would offer a reliable and timely alternative, easing the pressure on our overburdened highways and providing a more comfortable option for long-distance travel.
  • South Australia’s regional communities are vital to our economy, culture, and future growth. Yet, they remain limited by long travel times, overreliance on road transport, and lack of efficient, sustainable alternatives.

Economic Benefits:

  • A train service would promote tourism, making South Australia’s regional areas more accessible to both interstate and international visitors.
  • It would support local businesses like Oyster industry, Grain industry particularly those in Port Augusta, Cowell, Port Lincoln, and surrounding towns, by improving logistics and providing faster access to Adelaide for business meetings and trade.

Environmental Sustainability:

  • High-speed trains are among the most eco-friendly modes of transportation, emitting far fewer greenhouse gases than cars and other mode of transport.
  •  Introducing this service would contribute to South Australia's broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development.

Increased Safety and Convenience:

  • Traveling by train offers greater safety and comfort, particularly during long-distance journeys.
  • With the recent rise in road accidents and the stress of long road trips, a rail service provides a safer, more relaxing alternative.

Job Creation and Regional Development:

  • The introduction of this rail service would create numerous jobs, from construction to ongoing operations and maintenance, benefitting both Adelaide and regional South Australia.
  • It could also encourage further infrastructure investment and development in regional areas, fostering growth and prosperity.

  • Proposed Route: The proposed high-speed train route would connect:

Adelaide: The starting point, offering easy access to the State’s capital, services, and business hubs.
Port Augusta: An essential regional hub and the gateway to the Far North.
Cowell: An essential Oyster Producer and contributor of sea food processing Centre, Grain exporter and Tourism Hub.
Port Lincoln: A growing coastal city known for its agriculture, seafood, and tourism industries.

This route will serve key communities along the way, including Port Pirie, Whyalla, Port Gibbon, Arno Bay and other towns, allowing them to benefit from improved transport links.

Conclusion:

We believe that a high-speed train service linking Adelaide to Port Augusta, Cowell and Port Lincoln would revolutionize South Australia, enhance economic activity, promote environmental sustainability, and improve the quality of life for residents in both urban and regional areas. We urge the government to take immediate steps to evaluate the feasibility of this vital project and invest in the future of our State.
