Implement a Good Samaritan Law Mandating Medical Assistance For Individuals in Distress

The Issue

This plea stems from a tragic personal incident: on July 28, 2020, my brother lost his life to an overdose. Instead of calling 911, a childhood friend robbed him of his personal belongings and left him to perish. No criminal charges were filed against this person as there is no existing law that requires people to seek medical attention in such life-threatening situations.

This event occurred in Norristown, PA, but it mirrors a nationwide crisis. Unfortunately, my brother isn't the only victim of such neglect. According to the CDC, nearly 841,000 people have died since 1999 from a drug overdose. Over 70,000 overdose deaths were reported in 2019 alone.

But imagine how many of those lives could have been saved if someone had simply called for medical attention? With a Good Samaritan law in place, we could ensure that people are legally obliged to help during such emergencies, rather than exploiting the situation and ignoring the distress of others.

By sharing this story, I hope to rally your support in championing a Good Samaritan law in Norristown, and eventually across the nation, to prevent more unnecessary loss of life. This law would enforce a duty to call for help when someone is in obvious need of medical attention and incentivize life-saving actions rather than the disastrous consequences of inaction. It's a change that can literally save lives.

Please join our fight and sign this petition. Make the call to save a life a necessity, not just a choice. Together, we can pressure lawmakers to take this vital step in helping those in need.
