The Issue

Every Friday, after the school bell rings, I find myself completely exhausted. The mental toll of five consecutive days of school is overwhelming, leaving only two days to recharge before starting all over again. This cycle is all too familiar not just to me, but also to countless students across Washington state.

The five-day school week, longstanding as it is, demands reassessment in light of modern challenges students face today. With increasing academic pressure and extracurricular obligations, students often struggle to find time for themselves, leading to burnout and stress. Studies have shown that mental health is crucial to educational success, yet many students find themselves devoid of the opportunity to recover.

Proposing a transition to a four-day school week, excluding Fridays, could offer numerous benefits. Several districts in the United States that have adopted a four-day week report increased student attendance, improved academic performance, and a boost in student morale. This scheduling adjustment can lead to more focused educational periods and allow students to return to school rejuvenated and ready to engage.

Moreover, in today's digital age, integrating technology into daily routines can enhance the learning experience. Allowing students to use their phones responsibly can provide them with tools for learning, connectivity, and self-expression. By managing screen time effectively, schools can work with students to embrace technology positively.

It is essential for educational policies to evolve alongside society. Implementing a four-day school week in Washington state with proper adjustments to curriculum and schedules can enhance both students' welfare and their academic outcomes.

I urge you to join me in calling for this change. Your support can help make a difference in the lives of thousands of students. Please sign this petition to advocate for a more progressive and student-friendly educational system in Washington state.
