The Issue

As a dedicated student in the Philippines, I know firsthand how hard it can be to keep up with academic demands and aim for the honor roll. However, I've noticed a trend in our school that the title of "with honors" has become so common that it loses its significance and creates an unfair atmosphere for students who genuinely strive to excel. The current grading system needs to be re-evaluated and reformed.

In many schools, the criteria for assessing students seem inconsistent and lack transparency, leading to grade inflation and a less meaningful designation of honors. According to a report by the Department of Education, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of students receiving honors, which suggests that the system might not be fairly recognizing true academic excellence. This dilution of honors not only affects students who are genuinely deserving but also pressures students to focus more on grades than on actual learning.

For example, in a classroom where nearly every student achieves honors, the distinction that once motivated students to strive for their best becomes just a part of the norm. This situation leads to a competitive environment not based on quality education but rather on achieving a numerical score.

I propose the following changes to create a more equitable grading system: First, there should be a clear and standardized criteria across all schools in the Philippines for how grades are awarded and how honors are designated. Secondly, schools should adopt a criterion-referenced grading system to emphasize individual student achievements rather than comparing students against one another, which only adds undue stress. Lastly, increase professional development for educators to ensure they can fairly and accurately assess student performance.

Let us work together to adopt a grading system that accurately reflects a student's hard work, dedication, and learning rather than just their ability to navigate a possibly skewed system. By signing this petition, we can urge the Department of Education to evaluate and reform our grading policies to ensure fairness and restore the honor in "with honors." Please join me in advocating for a fair and just educational environment, one where every student's efforts are genuinely recognized and valued.

Please sign this petition to call for a fair grading system in our schools.
