Currently, the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) has no specific bathroom policy in place. This absence of regulation can lead to confusion, discomfort and even conflict amongst students. As parents and community members, we are concerned about the lack of a clearly defined policy.

Our schools should be places of comfort and security for all students. Implementing a bathroom policy based on biological sex can provide clear guidance and alleviate the uncertainty that students and staff may face. This approach aims to ensure that all students feel respected and safe while using school facilities, balancing privacy, safety and practicality.

Data from other school districts has shown that having a defined bathroom policy can significantly reduce incidents of bullying and increase students’ sense of safety. According to a study conducted by the National School Boards Association, policies that provide clear instructions regarding bathroom usage contribute to a better school climate and fewer disciplinary issues.

Moreover, this policy need not be exclusionary; many schools successfully incorporate alternative solutions such as private bathrooms for students requiring heightened levels of privacy.  Implementing policy in general ensures all students have options that align with their personal needs.

We believe the BCSC school board has a responsibility to address this pressing issue. By enacting a clear bathroom policy, they can take proactive steps towards fostering a more safe and secure environment for all students.
