The Issue

Living by the beautiful shores of Lake Austin has always been a privilege, one that brings a sense of community, identity, and pride to those of us who call this area home. From early morning fishermen to families enjoying a sunset cruise, Lake Austin is a shared treasure, providing countless hours of joy and recreation. However, recent changes in boating practices threaten this harmony. More and more frequently, unattended boats are being left moored, anchored, or tied to trees and vegetation for extensive periods, upsetting the delicate ecological balance of the shoreline and limiting access for all residents.

The beauty and vitality of Lake Austin are under threat. Our shared responsibility as residents, boaters, and property owners is to protect its natural resources and ensure it remains accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Unattended vessels not only create obstacles for other boaters navigating the waterways but also pose significant risks to the health of the lake's ecosystems. Vegetation becomes damaged from repeated tying to trees and shoreline plants, disrupting wildlife habitats and eroding precious soil that stabilizes the shore.

Moreover, these unattended vessels can become safety hazards due to shifting weather conditions and unwarranted damage caused by continuous exposure. This practice creates navigational challenges, increases the likelihood of accidents, and potentially contributes to increased pollution through leaks or spills. Other communities have implemented solutions to address these issues, such as San Diego's Mission Bay Park and Oregon's Willamette River, where regulations on unattended mooring have dramatically improved safety and environmental outcomes.

Thus, we are asking the City of Austin to implement a 72-hour limit on unattended shoreline mooring and vessel storage. This regulation is not an attempt to limit the enjoyment of our lake by any group but rather a necessary step toward sustainable and shared stewardship of our waters. By establishing clear guidelines, we can ensure that Lake Austin remains a thriving destination for recreation while protecting the natural beauty that makes it so unique.

Join us in our mission to safeguard our shoreline for current and future generations. By signing this petition, you're advocating for a proactive, community-driven solution to maintain equitable access to Lake Austin for all its users. Let's work together to ensure Lake Austin remains a well-preserved gem in our city's landscape. Please add your voice to this cause and sign this petition today.
