Implement a 4-Day, 32-hour Workweek and Maintain Full Pay
The Issue
For me and countless others, the standard 5-day workweek feels increasingly unnecessary and detrimental to our quality of life. The advancements in technology and massive leaps in worker productivity have created an opportunity for us to reconsider how we structure our work schedules. It is time to advocate for a 4-day, 32-hour workweek (4 eight hour shifts) without any reduction in pay. For example, an employee making $100,000/yr would still make $100,000/yr. For hourly employees, simply raise the hourly pay by a certain percentage to make up for the reduced hours.
Our modern society has left many workers chained to their desks for extended periods, which has taken a toll on our health, mental well-being, and family life. The OECD data shows that countries with longer work hours do not necessarily yield more productivity. Contrastingly, countries like Norway and Denmark, which have shorter workweeks, have seen an increase in productivity (OECD, 2018).
Implementing a 4-day workweek would provide immediate benefits to millions of workers. Besides increased job satisfaction, and reduced stress, it also brings potential environmental benefits due to less commuting, which contributes significantly to our carbon footprint. A New Zealand company's trial of a 4-day workweek found a 24% improvement in work-life balance (Perpetual Guardian, 2018).
The call for a 4-day workweek is not merely an appeal for more leisure time. Instead, it is a practical and achievable strategy that can contribute to our health, happiness, and overall quality of life. It's time to break free from the traditional 5-day workweek mold that no longer serves our best interests.
Sign this petition if you believe in a 4-day workweek with full pay. It's time to redefine our work-life balance for a healthier and more balanced society.
