The Issue

Growing up in Sussex County, Delaware, I had the privilege of witnessing vast expanses of farmland and thriving wildlife that painted a picturesque landscape for our community. However, in recent years, the relentless pace of development has started eroding the natural beauty and ecosystem that we hold dear. The lands where I once played and explored are now being cleared, making way for residential and commercial developments. This sweeping change disrupts not only our environment but also the community fabric and heritage that define Sussex County.

A 1-year moratorium on developments would provide a much-needed pause, allowing us to assess the impact of these changes with a strategic and sustainable approach. During this moratorium, local officials and citizens can collaborate to establish a comprehensive development plan that balances growth with environmental preservation, ensuring the preservation of our agricultural lands and wildlife habitats.

Moreover, a pause will enable the reassessment of local infrastructure and resources, ensuring they can support new developments while maintaining the quality of life for current residents. According to recent studies, uncontrolled urban development often leads to significant environmental and socio-economic impacts, including increased pollution, loss of biodiversity, and overburdened infrastructure systems.

Sussex County's unique charm lies in its lush landscapes and rural character, which can be safeguarded through thoughtful planning and community engagement. By supporting this petition, you stand with others who believe in proactive, not reactive, planning for our future.

Join us in urging our local policymakers to implement this moratorium, creating a legacy of sustainable development that future generations can enjoy. Together, we can make sure that Sussex County remains a place where both nature and community thrive. Please sign this petition to make a difference.
