Every morning around 7:40 AM in Grand Rapids, MI, at Forest Hills Northern High School, the same frustrating pattern repeats. Even when students leave early, it can take 4–6 minutes just to get through the congested drop-off line. By the time they reach the doors, it’s 7:45 — and they’re locked out and given detention for being one minute late.

It’s not about poor planning; it’s about an unpredictable system. Some mornings the drive takes five minutes, other days it takes fifteen. To guarantee being on time, families would have to leave as early as 7:10 for a 7:45 start, which is unrealistic and creates unnecessary stress for both students and parents. Students are already on campus and trying to be punctual — they shouldn’t be punished for traffic they can’t control.

We’re asking for a simple, reasonable fix: a two-minute grace period, locking the doors at 7:47 instead of 7:45. This small change would acknowledge real-life traffic delays while still upholding expectations for punctuality.

Research shows that even slight flexibility reduces anxiety and improves attendance. Let’s show students that Grand Rapids schools value fairness and understanding over rigid punishment.
