The Issue

The Issue

Wake County students and teachers are experiencing lots of stress, sleep deprivation, and burnout. With long school weeks, heavy homework loads, and early start times, many students struggle to stay focused and energized by the end of the week. Research shows that teenagers need more sleep than they’re getting, and early mornings can negatively affect their attention, mental health, and academic performance. The issue is that the current schedule doesn’t give students enough time to reset or catch up before starting their final day of the week.

A 2-hour delay every Friday would provide a built-in break that helps students recharge and show up to school more alert and ready to learn. It gives students extra rest, relieves stress from busy weeks, and supports healthier sleep schedules. Teachers also benefit from the extra time, allowing them to prepare lessons, meet with teams, and catch up on planning without sacrificing after-school hours. This small weekly change can improve the overall school environment by creating calmer mornings and more engaged classrooms.

Implementing a weekly 2-hour delay would show that Wake County prioritizes student well-being and academic success. Schools that support healthy routines often see better attendance, improved behavior, and stronger academic outcomes. By creating a consistent, manageable schedule change, Wake County can make Fridays more productive instead of more exhausting. This proposal isn’t about less learning-it’s about better learning, healthier students, and a school system that adapts to what young people actually need to thrive.
