Implement 12-Hour Shifts for CNAs in HMH Palisades Medical Center North Bergen ICU
The Issue
As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in HMH Palisades Medical Center North Bergen, NJ. I have witnessed first-hand the challenges we face due to short staffing. Our current schedule of 8-hour shifts over five days is not only exhausting but also contributes to this staffing issue. We believe that transitioning to 12-hour shifts over three days, similar to our nursing colleagues, could be a solution.
This change would not only alleviate the problem of short-staffing but also provide better continuity of care for our patients. Research has shown that longer shifts can lead to improved patient outcomes and increased job satisfaction among healthcare workers (source: American Journal of Critical Care). Furthermore, it would align us with the majority of hospitals across America where 12-hour shifts are becoming increasingly common.
We understand that such a change requires careful consideration and planning. However, we firmly believe that this shift pattern adjustment will significantly improve our work conditions and ultimately result in better patient care within our ICU.
We urge you to consider this proposal seriously and take into account how these changes could positively impact both staff welfare and patient care. Please sign this petition if you support CNAs working 12-hour shifts over three days per week in HMH Palisades Medical Center North Bergen's ICU.
