The Issue

Petition to Southwick’s Zoo Mendon MA:

Improve the Rabbit’s Living Conditions immediately.

As concerned visitors and animal advocates, we call on Southwick’s Zoo to take immediate action to improve the welfare of the rabbit currently housed on display.

The rabbit’s current enclosure is far too small, barren of enrichment, and fails to meet even the most basic welfare standards for domesticated rabbits. According to reputable sources such as the House Rabbit Society and The Bunny Lady, rabbits require:

A minimum of 8 sq. ft. of enclosure space with at least 24 sq. ft. of daily exercise area,
Access to enrichment items such as chew toys, tunnels, and hiding places,
Daily activity and mental stimulation to maintain physical and psychological wellbeing.

Southwick’s Zoo is failing to meet these widely accepted standards of care. Keeping a domesticated pet rabbit—an animal not typically exhibited in zoos—in such restrictive and unstimulating conditions is unethical and deeply concerning.

We demand that Southwick’s Zoo:

Acknowledge public concern

Provide a clear action plan to expand and enrich the rabbit’s living space.
Commit to accountability by confirming when these improvements have been made.

This issue is urgent. The welfare of this rabbit reflects the zoo’s integrity and its commitment to humane animal care. We urge immediate action to bring the rabbit’s environment into alignment with modern zoological and veterinary welfare guidelines.
