Chief Imam:Direct Gujarat imams to host Friday sermon addressing domestic violence & abuse

The Issue

She was beaten by her husband for no fault of hers just because of some casual disagreement with him. This is a tragic incident. Imagine the plight which my cousin sister would have gone through when she was being hit at that time.

And this is not an isolated incident. Thousands of women in India go through this ordeal regularly so much so that domestic violence has now become the norm. Its prevalence has now become a gory truth with travails on the soul of a woman as she has nowhere to get justice from; because domestic violence is often justified -- either by her husband, her family or by the victim i.e the women herself.

When my cousin sister narrated this story to me: I was shocked. And frightened. Because her husband was not an uneducated, illiterate man. This atrocity was committed by him despite being educated. I realized then that education is not a sufficient condition to challenge deeply rooted & ingrained social & cultural norms.

Hence I wondered -- what if my future husband turned out to be a monster like him? What if I, as a woman, was stuck in a situation similar to my sister's where my circumstances turned out to be such that I could have no way out.

I was terrified envisaging a bleak future with my future husband. It was alarming.

And so, I wanted to do something. I didn't want myself or million other women to suffer the oppression of their husbands which leaves the women with abhorrent scars of abuse -- both physical & psychological. Despite policies in place against domestic violence, the problem is still rampant in India as mores of male dominance are valued more.

Being a believer of - ‘change begins at home‘; I decided if I could positively use religion to weed out this social evil of domestic violence. I decided to use it as a tool to bring about change in my society since it has long been hijacked by cherry -picking or misinterpretations that mostly benefit men.

For that, I needed the help of progressive imams (Islamic scholars). Imams in Muslim society root for the betterment of the Muslim community. They deliver 'khutbahs' aka sermons on Friday congregations to address important issues from both religious & social constructs.

Since domestic violence is an issue that needs to be addressed and we as a community must come to terms with, and must not tolerate, I resolved to eliminate it via the assistance and support of progressive imams. This, because religious scholars are mostly perceived as a figurehead, whose advises and commands are often heeded by their followers.

Henceforth, to foster ideas against domestic violence & abuse among Muslim men (young & old) and to shape new narratives, I would kindly request you to join and support me in asking Dr Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi (Chief Imam of India) to issue directives to imams (registered under All India Organisation of Imams of mosques) of major mosques of Gujarat to host a Friday sermon on domestic violence and abuse at least a month .

Because what community can thrive when women and especially wives in that community are abused & not treated with respect, kindness, love & care.

Please sign and share my petition if you believe that it is crucial to engage men and boys at mosques via lectures to make them aware of domestic violence and abuse and oppose it.

The Decision Makers

Dr. Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi
Chief Imam, All India Imam Organisation
Responded
I begin in the name of God who is very merciful and benevolent. Firstly, I would like to talk about Afrin, who is like a sister/daughter to me. She took the initiative and started a campaign on Change.org. She must have wondered where to take her grievance, whom to approach. She wanted to reach out to a religious leader like a Mufti or Imam. She reached out to me on Twitter. I responded because I realised that it is necessary to do so in today’s digital age. Many times women find it difficult to move out or express what they want and they do not even have access to platforms that enable them. Afrin reached out to All India Imam Organisation through Twitter and expressed her anguish and shared her petition. Additionally, she said something really important. She said that there are so many women, who are being subjected to violence and are going through this pain. The story she shared truly revealed the nature of pain that has been inflicted on women. It is a case of domestic violence and it is imperative that all of us raise our voices against it. She requested me to ensure that this message reaches more people through various Imams presiding over different mosques across the country. I believe in today’s day and age, it should be done. As a first step, I announced it during my sermon in my mosque and then requested other Imams to do the same because the kind of oppression that is happening, should not continue anymore. A woman is a mother, a sister, and a wife. She deserves to be loved and respected. When a woman gets married, she leaves everything behind and starts a life with you. She takes care of you and your household. She ensures that you sleep soundly. She feeds you before having a meal herself. She takes care of your children and safeguards your house. She is your companion through all the ups and downs. After all this, should she be disrespected or honoured? Our Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) taught us to respect and love women. People who love and respect women are blessed and God is always merciful towards them. Their homes always emanate light. God takes away his benevolence from those who disrespect women. Hence, we should raise a voice against domestic violence from all mosques, and I would say, not just mosques but all religious institutions like temples, churches, gurudwaras, matths etc. Women are a part of humanity and every community is facing the problem of domestic violence. We cannot ignore it anymore. I urge all religious leaders whether they are Imams, Fathers or Pujaris, to take cognizance of this fact and make use of their sermons to spread awareness about this issue. They can do it during their regular sermons or even during special occasions. Women should be loved and respected. Only then will we be blessed. We generally do not pay attention to this but now we have to ensure that such acts should not continue. That is why I have responded to Afrin’s petition. Afrin is no longer alone - the entire country is with her. Change.org is with her. All India Imam Organisation is with her. So many people have joined her in this cause. All of us should work towards ensuring that women are loved and respected, irrespective of their caste or religion. We have to come together and raise our voices so that women do not suffer and are empowered in our society. I pray to God that all my sisters and mothers get all the happiness, love and respect that they deserve. May they progress and stay happy. This is my prayer as well as my message.
