The Issue
Calling for the REMOVAL of MATTESON ESD 159 Supt. Dr. Mable Alfred
Supt. Dr. Mable Alfred should be fired from Matteson ESD 159 effective immediately. She is not operating in the best interest of our children or our community. Her decision making is a liability to our community.
This summer Dr. Alfred, removed Kimberly Johnson as the principal of Colin Powell Middle School. The community expressed its outrage to this decision, but our concerns were ignored. Dr. Alfred and four school board members, Board President William McClinton, Vice Pres. Carolyn Griffin-Palmer, Secretary Bernice Brown, and Member Debra Ellis made the decision to remove Principal Johnson and replaced her with Mr. Cedric P. Nolen without the position being posted or interviewing other candidates. Mr. Nolen came from a school with lower test scores and he has a Do Not Hire designation in his record from the Chicago Public School(CPS) system. Shortly after the announcement of Mr. Nolen’s hire in July, rumors swirled about sexual misconduct allegations against him. The superintendent and the four board members failed to do their due diligence and run a complete background and reference check on the candidate they hired. It has also been revealed that board Vice President Carolyn Griffin-Palmer is a long time associate of the newly hired, now fired Mr. Nolen. Unfortunately the sexual misconduct rumor was true and in addition there are documents supporting charges of child abuse/neglect. For many years this district has been plagued with family/friends hiring and creating jobs and power opportunities for other family/friends. This ongoing nepotism and cronyism is not productive for the stakeholders of Matteson and Richton Park and has cost us in more ways than one.
On September 11, 2019, during the scheduled board meeting, Dr. Alfred defended her actions and continued to be dishonest about their vetting process. Simply do an internet search of “Chicago Public Schools FOIA requests” click public archive search Cedric Nolen CPS. You will see the lie for yourself. Neither District 159 nor Dr. Alfred have NO requests listed. Additionally CPS spokeswoman Emily Bolton said “Other school districts routinely contact CPS as part of reference checks, and we provide them information about substantiated misconduct. In this instance, no such request was made”. Dr. Alfred’s conduct is unacceptable and she should be held accountable. She is the highest paid administrator in our district. She just received a new contract and raise in pay making her base salary $185,000, and she can be paid for 106 vacation and sick days from her previous contract amounting to $75k, plus a $25k lawsuit settlement against District 159 for a non renewal of her contract (which was subsequently renewed), all approved by our current school board. These are YOUR taxes dollars.
Dr. Alfred doesn’t deserve $200k-$300k of our hard earned money and is incapable of leading our school district, protecting our children, and respecting our community. This is not her first time going after administrators and staff in our district. Now she’s intimidating our children, on Friday September 13 she allowed administrators into classrooms at Colin Powell MS to warn students not to protest. This is an infringement on their 1st amendment right. Matteson ESD 159 board should do the right thing and relieve Dr. Alfred of her duties, effectively immediately. No more damage to our children and community.
