Rules of Professional Conduct: Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in the Legal Profession

The Issue

Dear Illinois Attorneys, Members of the Illinois Bar, and Friends of the Court:

This is not a monetary request–this is a call to action.

Sign to Support: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion within the Illinois legal profession by affixing your signature to this petition in support of Proposal 19-07, which will discourage workplace harassment and discrimination within the State of Illinois legal profession.

Who:

Illinois Attorneys, Members of the Illinois Bar, and Friends of the Court.

What:

Proposal 19-07 (explained below)

When:

2019

Where:

The Illinois Supreme Court, The Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.

Why:

To protect Diversity, Equity & Inclusion efforts within the Illinois legal profession.

How:

If adopted, Proposal 19-07 will place a rule on the Illinois Supreme Court Rules of Professional Conduct that the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission will be allowed to enforce. Proposal 19-07 reads as follows:

"A lawyer shall not discriminate against any individual in conditions of employment because of the individual’s race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation, family responsibility, or physical handicap."

To become an official rule, the Proposal must pass two committees: (1) The Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee; and (2) The Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Professional Responsibility, before the Illinois Supreme Court reviews the Proposal and adds it to the Illinois Supreme Court Rules of Professional Conduct.

Good news:

Currently, Proposal 19-07 has passed the first step–the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee–and is pending a second review before the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Professional Responsibility.

Call to Action:

We need you to participate by affixing your signature to this petition for submission to the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Professional Responsibility. Thank you for your review and for your support.
