Protect Oceans from Commercial Fishing

The Issue

In order to reduce climate change, minimize the destruction of the wildlife in our oceans, we must reduce commercial fishing. No company or industry is allowed to cast large nets and "fish the skys" of wild birds, or capture en mass millions of wild land animals, so why do we allow this mass scale destruction to occur in the oceans? There are pros and cons to eating seafood from a health perspective, and better solutions exist that minimize the unhealthy aspects of seafood. One thing is clear: commercial fishing at the current rate will deplete the oceans of life, contribute to climate change, extinct wildlife and destroy habitats, and contribute to forced human labor and illicit activities. Oceans need much greater protections and enforcement, similar to certain land based habitats. Fishing methods must be refined to eliminate unintentional capture of the wrong species, and other nations must be encouraged to implement similar protective legislation. Minimizing seafood consumption and supplementing with plant based foods will have a substantial positive impact. However, an immediate multifaceted regulatory, law enforcement and public relations effort is needed to avert irreversible damage to ocean wildlife and the planet as a result of commercial fishing. The oceans contribute 80% of the worlds oxygen and is a large carbon sink, but climate change will accelerate if  ocean wildlife is not protected. The scale of this problem is profound and little awareness exists at the public level. Act now by signing this petition to drive action at the federal level.
