Ilawan ang Pangangailangan ng mga Mamamayan: Redirect Funds from Mayon Lighting Project

Ilawan ang Pangangailangan ng mga Mamamayan: Redirect Funds from the Mayon Lighting Project

Throughout the years, the Philippines has faced hurdles in terms of its budget allocation across different sectors of society. The planned "Mayon Volcano Lighting Project" was allotted a P1.3 billion budget with the belief that it could boost local tourism by illuminating the slopes of the volcano with lasers and light fixtures, as outlined in the General Appropriations Act (GAA). However, this project was junked due to public backlash over its excessive cost. Given that the Philippines has significant gaps in funding for essential sectors such as public health and education, this petition aims to redirect the funds allocated for the Mayon Volcano Lighting Project toward more sustainable initiatives that would directly benefit the community.

The project raises several concerns, such as environmental risks and, most importantly, the "waste of resources." Although the project’s objective could be beneficial for tourism, its negative impacts outweigh the potential benefits. Joey Brecia, a resident of Albay, called the planned project a wasteful use of billions, stating that the funds should be redirected to more urgent needs, especially in communities near the volcano. It has been noted that the community is prone to blackouts and lacks proper evacuation centers in case of a volcanic eruption. Therefore, it would be much more practical to allocate the funds to issues such as these.

In simpler terms,
Why should we sign this petition?

  • It would help the residents near Mayon.
  • The funds could be redirected to more pressing community projects.
  • Environmental risks and negative impacts would be reduced.

Now is the time to act! This movement would significantly contribute to the community in Albay. The backlash against the Mayon Volcano Lighting Project is an opportunity to focus on addressing more relevant issues in the community. Public funds should be used in ways that positively impact the people of society. Signing this petition would help bring to light what is truly important for the people of the country. Ilawan ang Pangangailangan ng mga Mamamayan!
