Stop Discriminating Against Disabled Children

The Issue

When my son Drake wanted to play in the IKEA children’s play area, they refused to let his caregiver to go in with him. When I explained that Drake is autistic and needs supervision, I was told by several employees and management he could not go in at all. I was outraged. But then I learned that other families of special needs children were also reporting similar experiences at IKEA locations around the world. I think IKEA should develop a clear policy for special needs children that allows for them to be accompanied when needed. This will ensure equal treatment at all their stores so that no child is turned away because they have special needs.

As a parent and a special needs educator, I know what it means to give all children the chance at a normal life. Unfortunately, our society tends to segregate special needs children. They are often forced into separate classrooms, buses, and lunch times. When we were denied entry, it was just another way to remind my son he is different. I had enough and started this petition.

A company as big as IKEA has the power to change the way we treat our most vulnerable children. Something as small as being able to play with other children has the biggest impact. It reminds them they are just like other children. Please join me in asking  IKEA should develop a clear policy for special needs children that allows for them to be accompanied when needed. Together we can make a difference, and I look forward to the day when I can take my son to IKEA and keep my promise.
