Allow Iowa Female Cross County Athletes to Participate at an equal level as Iowa High School Male Athletes

I received this following email from the IHSAU. 42 other states have had their girls running a 5k instead of a 4k with very little drop in participation. Let's give our girls the opportunity to show exactly what they can do!!!! Please contact your coaches to let them know how you feel as well.

Thank you for your communication on the matter of 5k vs 4k.  We at the IGHSAU are all about participation and being involved in activities at the high school level.  The Iowa Track Coaches association took a survey last fall and asked the question of 5k vs 4k and the results came back overwhelming to remain at the 4k level for girls.  The vote was 2 to 1 to stay at 4k.  We have a lot of coaches that tell us that if we went to 5k we would loose the major portion of our 1A class and probably half of the 2A class because they now have trouble filling out a full team (needing 5 runners to make a team).  We are not in the business of being a training ground for colleges and universities.  We have a lot of Iowa girls who just want to enjoy the extra circular activities while they are in high school.  We have also been told by many college and university coaches that they have no problems in recruiting our female athletes. For all of the above reasons and the fact that their is no push from any where for us to go to 5k is the reason that we are still at 4k.  I would tell you that this is something we look at every year with our advisory committee which is made up of coaches in the sport. Thank you  John R OvertonAssistant DirectorIGHSAU johnoverton@ighsau.org
