IFSC must act to condemn disappearance of Iranian athlete Elnaz Rekabi

The Issue

On Sept. 16, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in custody after she was arrested by Iran's morality police for "inappropriate attire". This action sparked a wave of protests throughout Iran as women removed their hijabs in support of women's rights, and contested the religious clerical rulers. Further arrests of protestors and deaths while in custody have resulted throughout Iran in the following weeks.

On Sunday, Oct. 16, 33-year-old Iranian IFSC athlete Elnaz Rekabi competed in the IFSC Climbing Asian Championship in Seoul, Korea without wearing her hijab, in assumed support for the ongoing protests in Iran. Since Monday, Rekabi has reportedly been flown back to Tehran by Iranian officials, and has since disappeared. Friends and colleagues of Rekabi have been unable to contact her.

This petition is asking that the IFSC take action due to the recent events in which one of their athletes has disappeared due to her political protest while taking part at an IFSC event. The IFSC needs to do the following:

  1. Issue an official statement condemning the disappearance of one of it's athletes.
  2. Condemn the events in Iran in which women are oppressed, arrested, and killed for expressing their freedoms and rights as women.
  3. Ensure the safety and security of IFSC athlete Elnaz Rekabi by asking Iranian officials and the Iranian Climbing Federation to guarantee her safety and wellness. Perform regular safety checks to ensure her well being.
  4. Enact changes to guarantee the future safety and security of IFSC athletes taking part in IFSC events, as well as immediately following events.

This petition is not naive enough to believe that the IFSC can evoke social or political change in Iran, but is focused on ensuring action and change from the IFSC. The impact of Rekabi's actions at an IFSC event should have been immediately recognized by the IFSC as one in which her safety has been compromised and should have resulted in immediate action. To date, the IFSC's only official statement and reaction to the disappearance of one of its athletes can be found here.
