Iceland is still planning to go ahead with the fin whale hunt!

All whaled out and nowhere to go ...

Iceland is still planning to go ahead with the fin whale hunt, despite the fact that importers in Japan are not interested in purchasing the whale meat.

If stimulating Iceland's economy was the reason for resuming the hunt, then the lack of buyers for this product should give Iceland's new Prime Minister all the more reason to cancel it, no?

You can ask her to do just that - here.

Ask Iceland's new government to save whales

May 2009: Iceland's new Prime Minister has an important opportunity this month to end decades of damaging policy, by becoming a world leader in whale conservation.

Please ask Prime Minister Sigurdardottir to cancel Iceland's five year commercial whaling quota, and ensure that Iceland's representative at this year's International Whaling Commission meeting votes for whale conservation, firmly establishing Iceland as an environmental model for other nations to follow.

Iceland is already a leading nation in harnessing renewable energy, but the issue of whaling is a constant impediment to Iceland being viewed as a truly global environmental leader. Stopping whaling and instead strongly advocating eco-tourism and whale-watching as an alternative would not only be a strong signal of intent from the new administration, but it would also bring significant economic benefits to Iceland.
