Angely and Alexka Jerez Medina are 18-year-old twins from Detroit — asylum seekers from Venezuela, seniors-to-be at Western International High School, and members of their church community. 

On June 24, they were detained by ICE in Buffalo, New York. Now they are being held in separate detention camps. One in Texas, the other in New Mexico, far from their family and from each other.

The twins were part of a group of Detroit students who had traveled to New York for work. Four of the other students in their group have since been released. Angely and Alexka have not.

Their teacher, Kristen Schoettle, described them to local reporters: "These two girls are great students. They're shy, they get their work done, they are very active in their church. It's truly heartbreaking because their family wants to be here, they love this country, and they're being targeted."

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, and other elected officials have publicly called on ICE to release them. Their voices haven't been enough.

Angely and Alexka came to this country seeking asylum — a legal process. They deserve to have their cases heard, not to be locked away in detention camps across state lines, separated from their family while they wait.
