The Issue

ICE is turning local police into deportation agents.

Our law enforcement officers are being trained and paid to take over immigration enforcement. Detaining people is not the responsibility of our police officers. Studies have shown that neighborhoods where a police agency is contracted with ICE deteriorate trust among community members for fear that their family and friends will be deported.

The 287g program is a federal partnership that authorizes U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deputize state and local police officers to perform the duties of federal immigration agents. The program allows local agencies to investigate, detain, and process non-citizens for deportation. The people should decide whether they want their local agencies to participate in the program. However, most people are unaware whether their police office participates in the program, which is a drain on local resources and is a waste of local officers' time. This is an effort to raise awareness and take action on your local agencies’ collaboration with ICE.

All of us have grown up with close relationships with the immigrant community in America. We the people take pride in our roots, whether that be the same town our grandparents grew up in or oceans away on a different continent. We are a diaspora of cultures, languages, and beliefs. Our community is threatened not only by violence and fear from ICE agents, but also by our law enforcement agents, the same people meant to make us feel safe. Join us in raising awareness about your local law enforcement's contract with ICE.
