In my native Guatemala we celebrate Christmas Eve. That’s when we open our gifts and at the stroke of midnight every household lights up hundreds of firecrackers. I don’t buy gifts, I prefer to make things for those closest to me. This year was the exception, I collected and sent over fifteen hundred dollars to Luis, my local corn man (elotero) who was deported three weeks ago leaving his wife and baby daughter, to Josué (pictured), a day laborer at my local Home Depot, who was kidnapped and is in detention since last Friday, and to three other hardworking day laborers who have lost their livelihood from fear of ICE and their civilian kidnappers-for-profit. My fellow rapid-responders and I thank every one of you who have signed and shared the petition or who have helped your at-risk friends and neighbors in need.
