The Issue
While our Spanish-speaking neighbors are essentially held as prisoners in our own homes, our elected officials do nothing but speak empty words about ICE, refusing to put words into action.
Our mayor, city council, and police stand idly by while masked men kidnap workers for the crime of looking Latin American or foreigner (45% of our population are Spanish-speaking and 13% Asian).
Enough of platitudes! No more ‘thoughts and prayers!’ Silence is complicity! Our demands to City Council:
1) declare the taking of people without a judicial warrant or reasonable cause kidnapping, thus a violation of federal, state, county, and city laws.
2) ban the use of public facilities such as parking lots and police stations for any purpose related to the crime of kidnapping
3) use the city’s extensive LPR (license plate reader) technology to identify ICE vehicles that routinely violate the law by operating without front license plate, having mismatched front and rear license plates, license plates that do not belong to that vehicle.
4) declare the gathering of three or more ICE agents acting in unlawful manner an “unlawful assembly” and detain them as required by law.
5) activate the city’s Emergency Notification System (used during COVID) to alert residents of ICE activity
6) The city must issue an Emergency Notice within 12 hours of a kidnapping asking for the public's help to identify and locate victims and their loved ones. Families should be provided with an instructional handout and assisted in locating their loved one. Once a victim and/or their loved ones are identified, make no-cost legal representation available if they live or work in the city.
7) the city must offer free towing and vehicle storage services for kidnapping victims.
8) mount sting operations at areas commonly raided by ICE to ensure they’re following the law.
9) pass an ordinance requiring ICE agents to have clearly identifiable official uniforms, insignias, name and badge numbers; and to produce judicial warrants before conducting business in the city.
10) inform ICE that witnesses, legal observers, and the press have the right to ask questions and document any ICE activity within city limits and that the police will act accordingly to defend our constitutional rights.
Long Beach can be a leader by passing an ordinance that reflects this petition. Our state has the 5th largest economy in the world. Our city is home to half of the largest port on the west coast, playing a crucial role in the U.S. economy. The 710 freeway is the lifeline for goods coming and going through the port to the entire west of the nation with goods traveling as far as Chicago. Let’s recognize and use our power!
