One year ago, ICE agents pulled over Silverio Villegas González during a routine traffic stop in Franklin Park, Illinois. Within minutes, one of them shot and killed him. He was 38 years old, the father of two young boys who are now in foster care.

The Department of Homeland Security said on the day of the shooting that Villegas González drove at officers and dragged an agent a long distance. But body camera video from local police reportedly captured that same agent describing his injuries as minor, not long after the shooting happened.

A year later, the FBI still hasn't released a single detail from its investigation, not even the name of the agent who pulled the trigger. Illinois State Police only opened their own investigation in May, after a state commission found that federal agents in the area had used excessive force and misled the public. That investigation is still open, and the Cook County State's Attorney's Office says it is supporting it.

"The day Silverio was killed, the Department of Homeland Security was declaring it a justified shooting before there was any investigation," said Jonathan Manes, senior counsel with the MacArthur Justice Center, which is representing the family. "We don't have very much faith that the federal government is taking its investigation seriously."

Villegas González's family deserves to know what happened. His sons deserve a government that tells them the truth about their father's death instead of staying silent for a year.
