Ice Arena Complex needed for Fall River area

The Issue

Please sign this petition in support of getting an Ice Arena Complex in the Fall River area which will be sent to the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The greater Halifax area is surging with population growth, which has the overall ice availability for recreational programming in need of expansion.  These ice arenas serve programs ranging from Minor Hockey, Public Skating, Figure Skating, Ringette, Sledge Hockey, Short Track Racing and more. Many have ice programming 12 months of the year, and those that don't are leveraged by the Lacrosse and Ball Hockey communities.

The current over capacity of facilities across the Halifax Region during prime time hours has associations turning kids away from participating. On top of that, the ice available for each program continues to shrink linking those able to get registered into a program with less of an experience overall each subsequent year.

I interpret the greater Fall River area, as including; Fall River, Wellington, Fletchers Lake, Waverley, Windsor Junction, and Lakeview. This area has a population of over 14,000 with recent developments being announced for the Wellington area that will literally double the population on its own, not to mention the new development throughout the area already approved and moving forward.

The area on its own could support the demands for a 2 ice surface arena, and with the expansion of the greater Halifax region as a whole, more infrastructure is needed to spread out the demand and access to services.

Geographically Fall River makes sense.  This would be geographically the same distance from the 2 existing major 4-ice surface complexes in Bedford and Dartmouth respectively.  There is new Highway 102 access at Exit 5A that will make that area accessible from many directions, making it a usable location for several areas and associations.

Let's do this together and setup a future where kids and communities can still access ice which is such an important part of our Canadian identity.
