Lower the Amount of Assignments in the Iowa City Community School District
The Issue
This year is a difficult one with the pandemic, the election, more going on in students’ personal lives, the deaths of our peers, and overall bad news. The overall mental health of students is deteriorating with everything going on, and all school is doing is adding on to the stress. However, there is more homework being assigned than ever before. Some students are taking seven or more classes and cannot give 100% of their effort to each class. Though it may seem like we have more time to complete work because everyone’s stuck at home, we still have to go grocery shopping, pick up younger siblings, take care of pets, do chores, etc. all while during a worldwide pandemic and high political tension. If the ICCSD really valued students’ mental health, the workload would be lowered to accommodate everything going on.
