#IamJaneDoe (Support the Campus Sexual Violence Accountability Act)
The Issue
As someone deeply involved in advocating for survivors of Sexual Assault and Rape , I have been working arduously on a proposed federal bill known as the Campus Sexual Violence Accountability Act. This initiative stems from a clear understanding that when students report alleged rapes, sexual assaults, or other serious violent crimes on college campuses, leaving these investigations solely to the universities is not enough. While campus police can act to protect students, secure the crime scene, and preserve vital evidence, the responsibility for serious criminal investigations should not end there.
Sexual violence on college campuses remains a persistent and pervasive issue. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted while in college. These statistics underline the critical need for reform in how we handle these accusations. For too long, universities have faced conflicts of interest when conducting these investigations, often prioritizing their reputation over justice for victims. We must establish a protocol where such serious allegations are escalated to appropriate law enforcement agencies that have the authority and resources to conduct thorough and unbiased investigations.
The Campus Sexual Violence Accountability Act proposes a reliable system where collaboration between campus authorities and federal law enforcement ensures that justice is served, and trust is restored. This not only benefits those directly affected but also contributes to a safer, more transparent campus environment. Accredited agencies, unlike internal university boards, are better positioned to handle these serious offenses, bringing perpetrators to justice and offering closure to victims.
Your support is crucial. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a federal law that seeks to protect students, ensure fair treatment, and hold perpetrators accountable. Together, we can push for legislative change that embodies safety, justice, and integrity. Please add your name to this cause and join us in urging our lawmakers to take immediate action. Sign the petition to make this bill a reality and contribute to safer educational communities for all students.
