Christopher Isaacs started this petition to Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD

This petition is open to any all concerned citizens advocating for the safety of Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD employees and students as the start to the 2020-21 school year nears in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Let it be known that we all want to return to school.  Furthermore, the decisions that superintendents and school board officials are faced with are truly unprescedented - there is no decision that will satisfy everyone. We are also completely empathetic to the challenges that parents are facing every day COVID-19 exists; many of us are parents of students as well. However, teachers are struggling with feeling like they have been completely ignored and are voiceless as it pertains to the school opening decisions that have been made.

As the 2020-2021 school year quickly approaches, it is clear that concerned educators throughout Tarrant county as well as parents and community members agree that EMSISD's re-implemented plan to allow for face-to-face instruction on August 20th is simply not safe.  As it pertains to the nature of COVID-19 transmission, to quote Dr. Peter Hoetz, Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology & Microbiology and the Dean of the Baylor University's  National School of Tropical Medicine, "It is impossible to imagine how schools can be considered safe in areas of the country where virus transmission is accelerating. Within a few weeks of opening schools in the south, teachers, staff, bus drivers, parents will become ill and require hospitalization. School staffs will become demoralized, and schools will again close. In time, a collective feeling of futility and hopelessness will become pervasive."

The question we all have to ask is why are school re-opening decisions being based on Attorney General Paxton's opinion, while Dr. Heotz's opinion is being blatantly ignored?

To keep students, employees, and our community safe, we are imploring EMSISD's leadership to re-consider their current plan and instead start with remote learning only, returning face-to-face on September 28th, as recommended by the Tarrant County health commissioner. This will not only give the district more time to prepare for what face-to-face learning will look like, but more importantly, this will allow for community spread to decrease.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
